Tufts leadership thoroughly and carefully
selects university faculty, a process that can
vastly strengthen the Tufts experience. Our
campaign focus on faculty recruitment, retention,
and development continues to reinforce
the central role of this process in the future
of Tufts.
Our strength in large part depends on significantly
growing the size and quality of the faculty.
Faculty engaged in scholarly investigations,
for instance, enhance our productivity and profile;
their research is a natural complement to
teaching, encouraging students to explore new
domains and appreciate the vast and rapidly
changing nature of knowledge.
We must also create endowed professorships;
we aim to raise a total of $63 million for this priority
alone. A greater number of endowed chairs
will help attract top scholars to Tufts and ensure
the retention of our already outstanding professors.
Endowed gifts are among the most powerful
a university can receive. Their power lies in
their permanence and longevity. The future of
Tufts is being created by endowed gifts received
today. The funds are invested by Tufts, and the
interest generated is used, in this case, to bring
outstanding scholars to the university. The
endowment has been carefully managed, stead -
ily increasing in value to provide a hedge against
inflation and to provide a predictable, stable
stream of income over generations.
But we must also take on several facultyrelated
priorities. As part of encouraging new
research initiatives, the School of Arts and
Sciences will need to establish start-up packages
that provide the critical resources needed
for newly hired junior and senior faculty alike
to quickly develop high-level, funded research
programs. Costs associated with the physical
needs of education and research, particularly
in the sciences, can be very high—even pro -
hibitive. Faculty start-up funds for laboratory
and other research expenses allow us to stay
competitive and to magnify our reputation
in the sciences.
Faculty development funds keep professors
at the top of their fields, while increased
salaries will enable Tufts to keep pace with
competitors located in parts of the country
with significantly lower housing prices.
