MARYANNE WOLF
Professor of Child Development
Director, Center for Reading and Language Research
Maryanne Wolf, editor of Dyslexia, Fluency and the Brain, and author of the forthcoming book,
How the Brain Learned to Read, has written extensively on reading and learning disabilities.
Her research into how the brain reads words draws on the disciplines of linguistics, cognitive
neuroscience, and child development, and is applied to helping children whose brains may develop
differently in the acquisition of oral and written language. Her aim, she says, is to “release the
potential of every child.
“There is a unique spirit at Tufts that encourages us to use our collective knowledge for the
good of the neighborhood—neighborhood writ small and writ large. That spirit is very important
to me and has made me happier here than I might be anyplace else. I can’t tell you how gratifying
it is to wake up in the morning realizing there is so much to learn and know—and aware of the
real-world implications that knowledge has in the lives of children.”
