The physical plant of the college is the
most immediate and visible form of selfexpression.
We preserve the beauty of our
campus by respecting the historic architectural
character of the Hill, and by continuing
to build new facilities wisely. Bright
spots in the past year have included the
construction of the new Sophia Gordon
Hall and the Perry and Marty Granoff
Music Center. These new buildings are
now, for the first time in Tufts history, carefully
integrated into a new master plan for
the Medford-Som erville campus, a plan
that will ultimately produce an overall unified
campus design.
But there are areas where we clearly come
up short. We have underinvested in key
areas. For example, one of our oldest buildings,
Barnum Hall, cannot support the
dynamic needs of the biology department.
It cannot accommodate the needs of modern
biology, a field that now demands a much
more sophisticated research infrastructure.
The School of Arts and Sciences can no
longer afford to delay building critical facilities
that are indispensable to upholding our
reputation. Uppermost among our priorities
is an integrated lab complex. We envision
that this complex will finally provide what

Department Chair and Professor of Music
Former editor-in-chief of the Journal of the American
Musicological Society
Author of A Schoenberg Reader: Documents of a Life
Having served as associate provost and professor at Stony
Brook University, Joseph Auner joined Tufts in 2006 as music
department chair. He has published widely on musical developments
in turn-of-the-century Vienna; Berlin between the
world wars; and on the complex interrelationships between
music and technology from early radio to digital sampling.
As Joe observes, “Given the caliber of our faculty and our
amazing new music building, Tufts is poised to take a leadership
role in the future of musical studies.
“Musical scholarship is increasingly focusing on ways that
music not only reflects society and culture, but actively
shapes who we are and how we think and feel. At Tufts, we
expose students to music from other cultures and from past
centuries up to the present day to help them understand how
they fit in the world.”
