COLLABORATIVE LEARNING SPACES ENCOURAGE THE KIND
OF TEAMWORK THAT ENABLES STUDENTS TO BE SUCCESSFUL
IN BOTH THE ACADEMIC AND PROFESSIONAL WORLD.
Tufts researchers and scientists
have long required: a place for
dynamic discovery. The most exciting
advances in science now spring
from the intersection of disciplines,
and so we aim to connect disciplines
through innovative architecture—a
complex that will house
faculty from the biology department
and from several departments
within the School of Engineering.
The school’s interdisciplinary
focus will also benefit from a new
Humanities Center. The center
will be a place that enhances intellectual
give-and-take between
humanists and students and that
supports public forums. Broadly
defined themes, such as justice
or truth, would involve members
of all departments in the arts,
humanities, and humanistic social
sciences in provocative symposia.
TISCH LIBRARY: $1.5M
We have good reason to be proud
of Tisch Library. The Princeton
Review ranked Tufts University
libraries 18th of the 331 “best
colleges of 2002.” The Tisch
Library has worked hard to
achieve this status by targeting
specific areas of importance to
students and faculty. Yet much
work must be done to sustain this
achievement. The library aims to
support the following initiatives:
SUPPORTING RESEARCH:
$500,000 FOR COLLECTIONS
AND TECHNOLOGY
Tisch Library must strengthen the
collections that directly support
university-wide initiatives. These
collections include databases and
software, as well as books, journals,
videos, sound recordings,
and material in emerging formats.
The endowment will also fund
the training, research, technology,
and development necessary to
implement and deliver those
resources.
SUPPORTING THE TEACHING
LIBRARY: $1M FOR THE
LEARNING COMMONS
A teaching library needs collaborative
learning spaces that allow students,
faculty, and librarians to
work together. Such spaces encourage
the kind of teamwork that
enables students to be successful
in both the academic and professional
world. Collaborative learning
spaces make it possible for students
and faculty to integrate
electronic text, images, video,
and printed materials into papers
and visual and video presentations
in an environment where reference
librarians and technologists can
provide training and assistance.
