UNDERGRADUATE
STUDENT LIFE:
$700,000
So much of the college experience
happens outside the classroom.
A complete learning environment
requires quality living, dining, and
athletics facilities, vibrant intellectual
and cultural programming, and
intentional opportunities for personal
growth and self-discovery. We have
identified several initiatives that
would improve and enhance undergraduate
life at the university.
Residence Hall Improvements
A quality undergraduate experience
often begins where students live.
Several of our residence halls need
significant investments in order to be
truly collegial in spirit and function.
In particular, we must bring new life
to public living spaces to benefit residents
as well as the broader community,
just as the Sophia Gordon Hall,
multi-function space is now serving
as a rehearsal and performance space
for various groups.
Summer Programs
Our focus on undergraduate life also
seeks to create a vibrant learning
environment, and in this area, the
Summer Scholars Program reflects
successful innovation. This universitywide
initiative, founded four years
ago, capitalizes on Tufts’ vast research
capabilities to match students with
faculty/clinical mentors. Currently up
to 50 students are working with faculty
in disciplines as diverse as biology,
neuroscience, classics, and radiology.
About one fifth of their summer
stipends are endowed through gen -
erous gifts. By underwriting more
endowed scholarships, we will be able
to expand a program that clearly is a
defining moment for many talented
undergraduates, students who are
experiencing the excitement of
research and discovery firsthand.
We also need to expand support for a
summer internship fund that allows
25 Tufts students to work in nonprofit
organizations and the public sector,
providing them with income over the
summer to pursue these volunteer
experiences. Funding would allow us
to grow this popular program, which
draws more than three times as many
applicants as opportunities.
