Endowed professorships are among the most
important gifts universities can receive, says Tufts’
Provost Jamshed Bharucha.
In the course of the Beyond Boundaries
campaign, Tufts seeks to raise $187 million for
endowed professorships, to attract and retain the
best teachers and scholars and recognize their outstanding
work. Overall, Tufts seeks to raise $333
million—nearly a third of the campaign total—for
use in faculty recruitment and development.
The White Family Chair in Biology,
held by geneticist Sergei Mirkin,
whose DNA research has applications
in the fight against such hereditary
disorders as fragile X mental
retardation and Huntington’s disease.
The professorship “has allowed
me to build a better lab, buy new
equipment, and recruit new people,”
Mirkin says. “And it provides a financial
buffer that allows me to take
risks in my research that would be
difficult if I relied solely on federal
funding.” Benefactors are John and
Penny White, J97P, A03P, A05P.
The Seth Merrin Professorship in
Philosophy, held by linguist Ray
Jackendoff, whose appointment
enhanced the university’s growing
eminence in cognitive theory.

The Delta Dental of Massachusetts
Professorship in Public Health
and Community Service, held by
Catherine Hayes, who chairs the
Department of Public Health and
Community Service in the School
of Dental Medicine. The professorship,
created through a gift from
the state’s largest provider of dental
benefits, enables her to combine
research with programs to promote
active citizenship among students.
The Saqr bin Mohammed Al Qasimi
Professorship in International
Nutrition, held by Lynne Ausman of
the Friedman School. She is active
in creating the master’s degree in
Ausman
nutrition via distance learning, part
of a growing collaboration between
the Friedman School and the government
of Ras Al Khaimah (RAK)
in the United Arab Emirates, which
endowed the professorship.
A professorship in neuroscience,
held by Dr. Philip Haydon at the
School of Medicine. As this edition
went to press, $3 million to endow
the distinguished neuroscientist’s
professorship was given by the
Switzerland-based Foundation for
Research in Gastroenterology and
Related Fields. The gift was made
possible by Annetta Grisard-Schrafl,
J94P, a Tufts international overseer
and former trustee, and husband
Gustav Grisard, J94P.
