A Win for Athletics
Past national champion diver Kendall
Swett, A08, rewrote the Tufts record books
last season while soaring to the NESCAC
1- and 3-meter diving titles.
Tufts is on the springboard toward a similarly
impressive athletic feat.
As part of the its ambitious Beyond
Boundaries campaign, the university seeks
to raise $30 million for major improvements
to its sports and recreation facilities. The
result will be a first-rate athletics complex that
honors Tufts’ sporting legacy while reflecting
a university-wide commitment to fitness and
healthy living.
Steve Tisch, A71 (right), the Academy
Award-winning movie and television producer,
and chairman and executive vice president
of the New York Giants, has given the
project a flying start with a $10 million gift.
Construction is expected to begin in late
2008 on the Steve Tisch Sports and Fitness
Center, which will provide 66,000 square
feet of new space between Cousens Gymnasium
and the Gantcher Family Sports and
Convocation Center, and 55,000 square feet
of renovated space.
The vision for the athletics facilities project includes:
• A dramatic new entryway
that will open to the heart
of the fitness complex and
provide direct access to the
center’s most-used spaces
• A 15-lane pool in a state-ofthe-art
swimming and diving
facility
• Modern locker rooms to
equally accommodate men’s
and women’s varsity teams,
as well as appropriate recreational
locker space
• New regulation squash
courts that will enable the
hosting of dual matches
• A 12,500-square-foot fitness
and weight training area—
nearly double the current
fitness space
An additional $10 million has been
pledged toward the project by members of the
Athletics Board of Overseers and other alumni.
The complex will be a centerpiece of the
student experience: alive with activity, a place
for teaching, for competing, for socializing, and
for pushing, both physically and mentally, the
boundaries of one’s capabilities. The facilities
will underscore the university’s commitment
to health and wellness, ensure student-athletes
play their best, and give prospective students
yet another reason to choose Tufts.
• A renovated and more inviting
Cousens Gymnasium,
with the basketball court
enlarged to enable hosting
of NCAA post-season
tournaments
• A new coaching and administrative
office suite
• An expanded sports
medicine suite
• Three multipurpose teaching
spaces for aerobics, yoga,
dance, and physical education
classes.
