Dear Friends:
I am pleased to share with you the
progress we have made since we
launched Beyond Boundaries: The
Campaign for Tufts.
Through your time and support,
each of you has played a crucial
role in this historic endeavor. Your
generosity has empowered the university
to attract a diverse student
body and talented faculty; to build
its library holdings and enhance its

classroom technology; and to care
for and restore its historic buildings.
In total, your gifts make possible all
of Tufts’ contributions to education,
to society, and to the world.
In the following pages, we
highlight some of the ways Beyond
Boundaries is transforming Tufts.
We invite you to read about how:
• Generous benefactors are empowering
Tufts to admit students
on the basis of their academic
potential—not financial resources.
• Two couples’ commitment to
the environment has resulted
in an endowed professorship
in energy sustainability and
a research fund for alternative
energy at the School of
Engineering.
• A businesswoman’s passion for
animal welfare has led her to
support the Cummings School—
and Tufts—in remarkable ways.
All Together Now…
It’s a refrain often heard from donors to the
Annual Fund: “You’re in a capital campaign—
does my gift count?” The ready answer from
Alan Solomont, A70: “Every gift counts!”
“We’d like to emphasize that giving to the
Annual Fund is giving to the campaign,” says
the chairman of SolomontBailis Ventures, a
veteran fund-raiser now co-chairing his alma
mater’s Beyond Boundaries campaign.
“Every gift to the university is a gift to the
campaign,” Solomont says. “Whether $10 or
$10,000, each donation not only counts, but
is instrumental to our success.”
The Annual Fund is by far the most popular
means of supporting Tufts, states Solomont.
More than 32,000 donors from across the university
each year participate in the Tufts Annual

“ In total, your gifts make possible all of Tufts’
contributions to education, to society, and to the world.”
• A family’s generosity will dramatically
improve the experience
at the School of Medicine by
helping to build a campus center.
I hope that these stories
will inspire and inform you about
the great work that is being accomplished
at this university.
While we have achieved so
much, we still have work to do
before we are able to realize our
fullest dreams for our students.
We are grateful to you for your
commitment to our vision and hope
that you take pride in your involvement.
Please continue on this journey
with us to further enrich the
academic experience at Tufts, and
accept my thanks for your continuing
support of our mission.
Sincerely,
Lawrence S. Bacow, President
Funds, which raised more than $15.5 million
last year and are expected to take in even
more this year.
Solomont notes that the average gift to the
Annual Fund is just over $460. That support
is valuable indeed: “A gift to the Annual Fund
gives us the greatest flexibility in funding our
highest-priority projects. Key areas benefiting
from the Annual Fund include financial aid,
athletics, teaching, facilities, the libraries, and
student programs.”
About $125 million—roughly 10 percent—of the
campaign’s $1.2 billion goal lies in the realm of
annual giving. “The charge of the campaign is to
engage as many people as possible,” observes
Solomont. “The broadest possible participation
in the Annual Fund is one of our key objectives.”
