Jennifer Lofgren has worked in research laboratories and
faced the dilemma: In research, it is often inevitable that
some animals are harmed in order to develop treatments
that benefit many more animals, and many people.
“My ultimate career goal is to improve the way we use
lab animals,” she says. “Lab animals that are healthy,
comfortable, and not feeling stressed give much better,
reproducible data.” Jennifer took a big step toward her
goal as a Cummings student. Working with faculty mentor
Dr. Andrew Hoffman, she developed a non-invasive method
of measuring lung function in laboratory mice that returns
accurate scientific data without causing undue stress
to the mouse or requiring euthanasia. Her research was
published in the November 2006 issue of the Journal of
Applied Physiology.
“When I started at Tufts, I couldn’t imagine all the doors
that would be opened to me,” she says. “There are many
places for students to plug in and develop their interests.
We have ‘selectives’ that offer such opportunities as
working with wildlife veterinarians researching shorebirds;
with cardiologists studying how diet affects heart disease;
or with biomedical scientists studying tick-borne disease.”

Our Comprehensive
Campaign
These ambitious goals have
all come together under
one comprehensive effort:
our $100 million campaign,
part of Beyond Boundaries:
The Campaign for Tufts .
Through it, we seek funding
to attain each of our four
priorities.
SUPPORTING THE STUDENT
ExPERIENCE: $ 0 MIllION
Financial Aid: $ million
To meet our goal of supporting the financial needs of most
applicants, we must triple our resources for financial aid.
This endowment will be managed to ensure income for
current students and future generations, and to create
classes of the most capable and deserving students.
Community Service and Outreach: $1 million
Active citizenship has always been a defining component of
a Cummings School education. This funding will underpin
student-led efforts in community outreach, including Gap
Junction, a program allowing veterinary students to teach
biology-based labs to youth in the Boston and Worcester
areas; Paws for People, an animal-assisted activity/therapy
program; and the Pet Loss Hotline, a resource for people
struggling with the anticipated or recent loss of a beloved
animal companion.
Specialty Training: $ million
The Cummings School enhances student learning with many
highly desirable internships and residencies. Private support
will allow the school to expand this type of instruction for
our areas of strength—such as emergency and critical care
medicine—while building up specialties in the greatest
demand, such as pathology.
