Dr. Peg Shively describes herself as the veterinarian version of the old-
fashioned general practitioner. “Dogs, cats, ferrets, rabbits, guinea pigs,
hamsters—we see everything that comes through the door,” she says.
Dr. Shively and her two associates at Kennebunk Veterinary Hospital
each handle between 2,000 and 2,500 cases a year.
“After a 22-year career in veterinary medicine, I am still excited about
going to work every day—well, most every day! Our caseload in this
profession is so diverse and varied that we may often be challenged,
but we are never bored.
“My experience at Tufts encouraged me to develop the habit of lifelong
learning, to understand that we can never be prepared for everything we
will see in life. We were all empowered to keep digging for new facts,
to keep on the trail of more information—to keep asking questions.”
As the only veterinary school in New England, the Cummings
School plays a vital role in the health and well-being of animals
and humans in the region. Increasingly, it also serves as a leader
in the regional veterinary community and an incubator for life
sciences companies pursuing innovative new technologies. While
other schools receive substantial public funding, the Cummings
School relies more heavily on community support. This funding
model helps our school remain bold in the programs we develop,
and nimble in our entrepreneurial endeavors.
We now have an extraordinary opportunity to inspire and prepare
the next era of leaders in veterinary medicine. We invite you to
