The Tufts School of Engineering builds bridges to discovery through interconnections
with other Tufts schools and disciplines. This integrated approach to addressing
complex, global issues – issues that transcend politics and geography – is needed more
than ever. Faculty at the School of Engineering are already finding novel solutions.
The breadth and depth of these and many other initiatives creates a vast, interdependent
network of ideas, programs, research, scholarship, and curricula that distinguish Tufts
University School of Engineering as a leader in engineering education and research.
Yet our challenges, as we look ahead, are clear. The current engineering faculty
size of 62 is one of the smallest in the country and the school currently has only two
partially funded endowed professorships. The School of Engineering also has much
less research space than most of its peer institutions. And if the brightest, hardestworking
students are to be able to attend Tufts, financial aid needs to be increased.
Most engineering students don’t come from privileged backgrounds. Most come
from public rather than private schools. Thus, a larger percentage of engineering
students need financial aid than do their counterparts in the arts and sciences.
