Sarah helped organize a service
trip to Gyatsa, Tibet, (12,000 feet
high in the Himalayas), to install an
environmentally-sustainable latrine
and a solar cooker.
“ We had to learn about local con-
struction techniques and about
social and cultural norms. There’s
a big difference between designing
a latrine for the Appalachian Trail,
and one for a tiny village in Tibet.
All engineering students should
get an opportunity like this.
When you’re in school, you do a
lot of design work, but actually
implementing a design is different.”
“ The most important thing is to be
aware. Realize how some people
live, then do something to help.”
