With a new strategic plan in place, the School of Engineering now must secure the
resources it needs to sustain and strengthen its academic and research priorities.
Toward that end, the school is embarking on an ambitious campaign to raise $150
million to attract and support faculty, provide financial aid to draw the brightest students,
and refurbish and build new facilities. All of these objectives are founded on our
interdisciplinary approach to engineering education and research. Through its impact
on infrastructure, faculty, and students, the campaign will also bolster our educational
and research strengths in the following areas:

Leveraging Tufts’ reputation in international
relations and active citizenship and its faculty’s
world-renowned environmental expertise, the
School of Engineering is well positioned to address
the planet’s most pressing problems of resource
sustainability. We will explore new and creative
collaborations with our sister schools, such as that
reflected in the new Water: Systems, Science
and Society program. With increased faculty
and resources, we will further engage students in
groundbreaking research related to such areas as
alternative energy sources, environmental restoration,
and the mitigation of waterborne disease.

The intersection of engineering, medicine,
and the sciences is a natural avenue for Tufts
Engineering to traverse. Given the considerable
strengths of our sister professional schools in the
life sciences, we are ideally positioned to be a
leader in translational research, research that takes
discoveries from the laboratory to the clinic and
provides numerous tangible benefits to society.
We have already demonstrated innovation with
our established programs in tissue engineering,
pharmaceutical chemical synthesis, and medical
imaging. We will build on this progress.

The CEEO has been extraordinarily successful
in introducing engineering concepts to
children in grades K-12. We will expand the
center’s reach by strengthening partnerships
with industry while we forge closer ties with
Tufts child development, psychology and
education faculty. Through the creation of an
umbrella Institute for Engineering Education
Innovation, Tufts will also build programs
and enhance its reputation for innovations in
undergraduate and graduate education.
