The Friedman School is poised to move forward. The seeds we
planted more than 25 years ago have blossomed and helped to set
the world’s agenda for improving health, nutrition and food security.
But we have only just begun. We need to prepare for new harvests
by planting the seeds necessary for the next generation of nutrition
leaders. We must create an endowment that will allow the best and
the brightest to attend the Friedman School. This is the number one
priority for our comprehensive campaign. Additionally, endowment
funds are needed to provide the seed money for cross-school projects
at Tufts University. Our small endowment has significantly hampered
our ability to offer competitive financial aid packages to our students.

financial aid for students:
$ 9M
The future achievements and reputation
of the Friedman School will rely heavily on
the caliber of the students who graduate.
Only ten years ago the doctoral program
at the Friedman School was limited; now,
the number of applications for the doctoral
program has mushroomed. Increasingly,
though, our ability to attract world-class
doctoral students is hampered by our
inability to offer a financial aid package
that is competitive with other institutions.
Indeed, it is clear that the Friedman School
is not even competitive with its sister
institutions. In the past, the lack of financial
aid affected mainly doctoral students in the
biological sciences; this is no longer the
case. Top-tier policy students are also being
wooed aggressively by other institutions.
Therefore, a disproportionate share of
our efforts is focused on student financial
aid–tuition and stipend, and research.

The school is committed to continuing to
attract great faculty. In the coming years
we can expect significant turnover within
our current senior faculty. We are fortunate
that, in order to help attract top level faculty
to the Friedman School, Tufts University’s
Board of Trustees has approved the first,
tenure-track faculty position at the school.
Endowed professorships (new): $9M
We will create and fund new endowed
professorships to strengthen faculty
recruitment by offering and guaranteeing
financial stability for the life of the
appointment. Three planned professorships
parallel the school’s priority areas for
translational research:
• Nutritional Biochemistry
and/or Epidemiology
• Food and Nutrition Policy
• Behavioral Nutrition
A professorship in Behavioral Nutrition—
a growing field of research and nutrition policy
with national and international applications—
will further enhance the school’s already
strong reputation in this area.
Endowed professorships (existing): $3M
The continued viability of the Friedman
School relies on a collaborative, stable
relationship with the HNRCA. Many of our
key faculty are scientists at the HNRCA
