intellectual and research support. However,
the HNRCA is facing a financially challenging
time. Due to continued reductions in
government support for the HNRCA, a three
million dollar endowment will be used to
guarantee salary support for core HNRCA
faculty—key scientists who provide most of the
academic instruction and laboratory training
in biological sciences and epidemiology.
Endowed junior career development
chairs: $3M
In addition to senior-level positions, the school
needs to attract some key junior faculty who
have the potential to grow and contribute
to school leadership. We are in need of
endowment funds for assistant professors
in areas such as epidemiology, nutrition
science and nutrition communication.

The Friedman School is well placed within the
University family to build strong collaborative
approaches to solving complex societal
problems. The Friedman School has the
breadth of expertise to address the complexity
of modern nutrition. Endowment funds are
needed to generate seed money and support
to provide intellectual and financial incentives
for multidisciplinary, cross-school research
partnerships.

Annual giving is a vital, ongoing source of
support for the Friedman School. As a young
school with a dedicated but small alumni base,
we must encourage and deeply appreciate
participation from our alumni and friends at all
levels, and welcome multi-year commitments.
As part of Tufts University’s Beyond Boundaries
campaign, the Friedman school will increase
outreach to new friends for support. A
significant goal of the campaign is not merely
to raise new funds, but to markedly expand the
school’s base of support and commitment.

As obesity casts its shadow over American childhood,
Chris Economos is fighting back with thoughtful,
comprehensive, multi-pronged efforts that work.
Through a grant from the New Balance Foundation, she
launched “Children in Balance,” a major effort to design
obesity interventions that can trigger real change
across the country. She is also principal investigator
of “Shape Up Somerville: Eat Smart, Play Hard,” a
three-year project to help schoolchildren and parents
avoid obesity, and the “BONES Project,” a five-year
study to promote bone health in schoolchildren.
“Tufts distinguishes itself from other aca-
demic centers with its emphasis on expe-
riential learning, applied research, and
community activism. Faculty and students
want to roll up their sleeves and work
with their neighbors — all over the world.”
