HNRCA is one of the largest institutions
of its kind in the world, encompassing
22 principle research laboratories that
expand our understanding of the critical
relationships between nutrition, genes, diet,
and aging. Researchers investigate age-
related chronic diseases, cardiovascular
disease, cognitive impairment and
dementia, infectious disease, and cancer.

The Feinstein International Center works
in the fields of famine relief, nutrition,
disease, human security, institutional
change, and animal husbandry, often
encompassing many disciplines and
schools. Its staff — located in Medford,
London, Kabul, and Addis Ababa — bridge
the gap between academic research and
present day practice in humanitarianism.
The center’s team of academics and
practitioners educate tomorrow’s leaders,
and conduct research on emergency nutrition
and livelihood. The center advocates
for institutional change in governmental
and non-governmental agencies and the
development of humanitarian values and
standards for people and countries.

Former director, Vitamin A Program, Nepal
Dubbing him the “Vitamin Sherpa,” Time Magazine
named Ram Shrestha to its list of global health
heroes in November 2005. Shrestha received this
honor for his Vitamin A distribution campaign in
Nepal, a project that has helped halve the infant
mortality rate in the country and significantly
reduced night blindness among pregnant women.
“The time I spent at Tufts is an integral part of who
I am today. The school not only provided education in
nutrition and the technical skills to tackle nutrition-
related problems, but also exposed me to a wide range
of problems prevalent in different parts of the world.
The school also helped me develop critical
thinking skills about implementing strategies
to run a successful program. I gained a good
knowledge of research methodology and study
design which I use to this day in my program.
The network I developed at the school has given me
recognition and support. My advisor, John Field, was
wonderful, and I can’t thank him enough for helping
me adjust when I first arrived at the school as a 34-
year-old Nepali leaving his country for the first time.”
