From children to the elderly, the John
Hancock Center for Physical Activity and
Nutrition benefits lives by developing
sound exercise and nutrition programs,
influencing public policy, and promoting
physical activity nationally and internationally.
The Center’s skilled researchers conduct
science-based research on interventions
that make a difference in our lifestyles.
These interventions promote positive and
sustainable behavioral changes that improve
our health. With science as their guide, the
Center’s researchers craft interventions that
work — fostering strategic partnerships with
communities, states, schools, community
centers, and public health agencies to lessen
the epidemic of childhood obesity, improve
bone health, increase exercise, and change
eating habits.
This mission starts at the top, with the
President’s Marathon Challenge, bringing
together more than 200 runners — including
President Lawrence S. Bacow — to
participate in the Boston Marathon.
Proceeds help to support JHCPAN programs
in innovative nutrition, health and fitness.

Since 1936, the world-renowned Frances
Stern Nutrition Center has been granting
master’s degree in dietetics as well as
training Registered Dieticians through a
dietetic internship program accredited by
the American Dietetic Association. After
completion of the program, students enter
the work force in a broad variety of nutrition
positions, and some continue on to pursue
doctoral or other advanced degrees. The
Frances Stern Center also has hosted, and
has relationships with, dietetic internship
programs in Singapore, Taiwan, Israel, and
Australia. Students engage in research and
clinical trials in cooperation with the HNRCA,
and the Tufts-New England Medical Center.
