support: $ 5 million
In the fast-paced world of scientific discovery,
brilliant minds devoted to groundbreaking
research can change the world. At Tufts,
we are proud to host many such scientists
within our walls. To support our outstanding
scientific leadership — to recognize them
for their accomplishments and inspire them
to even higher achievement — we must
strengthen support for our distinguished
basic science research faculty. Among our
top priorities are endowed professorships
distributed across the strategic research
areas and cross-cutting platforms. Five full
professorships and 10 assistant/associate
endowed professorships are needed.
science faculty recruitment
packages: $ million
In the current competitive environment for
recruiting research scientists, attracting
top talent is crucial to the future of TUSM.
Recruitment packages include start-up
funds, lab renovations, and salary support
for three to five years. We are seeking
new scientists who want to commit their
careers to translating scientific discovery
at the bench to the bedside in our
disease-specific areas of strength and
the cross-cutting scientific platforms.

As part of a major research initiative in solving stubborn
global health problems, Professor Sonenshein and
colleagues have been awarded a $5 million grant by
the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation for research into
heat-resistant vaccines — a development that could
change the way vaccines are distributed, especially
to children, in the poorest parts of the world.
“I have been teaching and directing a basic
research lab at Tufts for more than 34 years. The
opportunity to interact with outstanding colleagues
and bright, motivated students remains a strong
attraction, both for the intellectual challenge and the
personal satisfaction. Tufts has the nearly unique
reputation of having created one of the best research
medical schools in the world, while maintaining a
spirit of humanity, collegiality, and cooperation, with
a notable absence of egotists and prima donnas.
“When the opportunity arose to launch a new
project that required collaborators in disciplines
other than my own, I was gratified to see how ready
my colleagues at the medical school, the veterinary
school, and Tufts Medical Center were to participate,
without hesitation and without preconditions. I have
never found another research institution where
I could have been as happy or as fulfilled.”
