The importance of the synergy and interdependency that flourishes between TUSM
and our affiliated teaching hospitals cannot be overestimated. The “classrooms”
in which our medical students have their earliest experiences in caring for
patients — where they truly learn to become physicians — are the affiliated Tufts
teaching hospitals. Our students are guided through their clinical rotations in core
areas of medicine by over 2,000 skilled, voluntary clinical faculty members on staff
at the hospitals. These clinical educators devote uncompensated time, often at
the expense of their practices, to training the next generation of physicians.
Additionally, the teaching hospitals play a
vital role in TUSM’s nationally mandated
translational research enterprise for taking
the development of treatment therapies
from the bench to the bedside — and back.
Crucial partners in clinical and translational
research, physicians at our teaching
hospitals enable clinical observations to be
brought back into the research lab to guide
future enhancements and to inspire new
discoveries.
Our goal is to strengthen these vital
partnerships. With campaign support we
can work with our teaching hospitals to help
them meet their own goals in patient care
and clinical research while ensuring and
maintaining clinical expertise to meet the
School of Medicine’s education and
research objectives.
community of clerkship directors:
$10 million
TUSM’s core capability is outstanding clinical
education, and skilled, dedicated clerkship
directors are essential to maintaining this
core. The Community of Clinical Educators
will recognize and reward the contributions
of the clerkship directors who take such
a pivotal role in bringing our students into
the hospital to learn at patient bedsides;
we will encourage our hospital affiliate
leaders to support their efforts as well. This
community will provide vital financial support
to the directors of the five core clerkships.
tusm clinical department chairs:
$ million
To recognize and retain outstanding clinical
leadership, we must strengthen support for
our distinguished clinical department chairs.
We will endow professorships for three or
more TUSM clinical department leaders.
