Today’s physician must be a master of many universes: at ease in the subcellular
realms of DNA, as well as in a community clinic; adept at computerized
virtual reality; conversant in the fiscal realities of managed care. In light of these
challenges, we must forge a new, “translational” approach to medical education.
This approach will integrate basic and clinical sciences with best practices, and
will require the most talented and dedicated students to master it. Our efforts
will focus on processes, supported by innovative informatics and other tools that
provide the rigorous and dynamic training necessary for our future physicians. Our
plan includes revision of the medical education program, as well as investments
in our teaching spaces and facilities. The major components include:
scholarships and stipends:
$ 5 million
To strengthen our ability to foster an
educational environment of respect and
diversity, as well as a community of multiple
perspectives and backgrounds, we plan
to significantly increase the number of
scholarships so that outstanding students
may have the opportunity to pursue medical
and biomedical graduate education at
Tufts, regardless of their ability to pay.
It is our plan to endow 80 half-tuition
scholarships for students in the School of
Medicine and 40 stipends for first-year PhD
graduate students in the Sackler School.
learning communities:
$1.8 million
To facilitate the development of
professionalism, to foster teamwork, and
to provide better guidance regarding career
choices, TUSM will introduce a program of
student learning communities to offer a
variety of learning opportunities, support
services, and mentorship.
translational Education
innovation: $1. million
Curriculum revision to strengthen
our medical degree programs.
Signature programs for specialized study
in the distinctive areas for which Tufts Uni-
versity and its partner teaching hospitals are
known, such as public health, nutrition, and
biomedical engineering.
MedExplorations are career exploration
opportunities available to students through
special electives at TUSM, as well as at part-
ner schools, that offer greater opportunities
for independent study.

community presence: $5 million
With the completion of the Big Dig
project, the South Cove and Chinatown
neighborhoods around the Boston campus
will undergo significant transformation,
a change that is also an opportunity for
the medical school to become a more
