PROVOST BHARUCHA
NEW CONNECTIO
Universities are organized into schools, and schools into departments. While
disciplinary knowledge remains the foundation of our understanding of the
world, great ideas—past, present and future—do not always fit neatly into
these categories. One of the functions of a provost’s office is to leverage the
latent synergies of the university to the collective benefit. Thus, the Provost’s
Initiatives serve to promote academic excellence while transcending the
traditional boundaries.
The Summer Scholars Program enables undergraduates to spend the summer
working on research or creative projects with faculty anywhere in the
university, including all of the schools and their affiliated hospitals, institutes,
and centers. The Provost’s Fellowships offer merit stipends to exceptional
Ph.D. applicants to our graduate schools. The Academic Innovation Fund
provides venture funding for faculty and student proposals that push the
boundaries of the existing academic structure. And the University Seminar
program brings together faculty and students from multiple schools to
focus on complex societal problems.
These are just some of the initiatives we have launched over the past five
years to go beyond traditional intellectual and organizational boundaries,
to explore connections that may not have been explored before, and to acquire
the multidisciplinary perspectives that are necessary to address
the increasing complexity of the world around us.
