UNIVERSITY SEMINARS
Exploring critical issues through innovative teaching that combines
interdisciplinary research with civic engagement
Passion is the core of Tufts University: passion for academic
excellence, for innovation, and for transformation. Our faculty
and students share this passion and the hope it engenders—that
collaboration and creativity build a community working together
to protect and shape the future.
The University Seminars were designed to kindle this passion,
and to mobilize academic excellence and intellectual partnerships
to examine and interpret the most significant issues of our time.
Open to all our students, each program addresses a thematic
topic, and includes faculty from at least two schools, active
learning with a minimum of lectures, and leading-edge
technology to produce and disseminate high-quality work.
Each of these cross-disciplinary programs is structured to
encourage cooperation and scholarship across schools and to
take advantage of the unique vision and perspectives of each.
These unequaled programs allow participants the opportunity
to study multidimensional issues of global relevance, from a
multidisciplinary viewpoint, putting our students and faculty in
the position to directly affect the world. Your gift sponsors one
of these exceptional programs, supporting the passion and collaboration
that will make a difference in the global community.
Professor Samuel Kounaves works in
his lab with the students with whom
he developed equipment that was
launched on a Mars mission.
“Working closely with the Center
for the Enhancement of Learning
and Teaching, the seminar faculty will
create a highly collaborative learning
environment for graduate and
advanced undergraduate students from
across our schools to uncover new
insights and approaches to very
complex problems. And by publishing
their results on the Web, they’ll launch
a rich and ongoing global dialogue
leading to new collaborations, new
research, and new solutions—a truly
exciting model for interdisciplinary
education with potentially far-reaching
social impact.”
