Advances in tissue engineering by Tufts researchers like
Dr. Jonathan Garlick (below), professor of oral and maxillofacial
pathology and director of the Division of Cancer Biology and Tissue
Engineering at the School of Dental Medicine, promise to revolutionize
the practice of dentistry. Dr. Garlick established the school’s
Center for Integrated Tissue Engineering as a source of human bioengineered
tissue for both academic scientists and the drug-discovery
industry. Research that he and Tufts colleagues are pursuing uses
human tissue engineering to help fight diseases like periodontitis and
oral cancer; provide dental and gum tissues to victims of accidents
or disease; and speed the development and testing of new pharma -
ceuticals by using artificial tissues to test potential oral therapeutics.
The support that Dr. Garlick has received from the Academic
Innovation Fund has meaningfully advanced research in his lab.
