Winna pursues cancer research in the lab of Professor Jonathan Garlick,
director of the Division of Cancer Biology and Tissue Engineering at the Dental
School. Comparing tissue grown in the lab to tumors grafted on mice, she is
studying whether something in connective tissue—found in the mouse but not
in the lab cells—causes certain genes to change and make cancer aggressive.
The findings have applications in the fight against oral cancer.
“Research allows me to think out of the box. I can take a question and try to
answer it and improve oral health care for the entire field.
“There are always opportunities to do things better. I can find a way that’s
better, we can invent something, we can collaborate with others to come up
with the best oral health care delivery system we can. That’s what Tufts is all
about.
“I love being part of an institution that’s known for public health. There are
a million different schools. Tufts is the one about citizenship, about giving
something back.”
