Inspirational teachers infuse the learning
process with meaning and passion. At
TUSDM, we need such faculty to enable
our students to keep pace with today’s everchanging
body of knowledge. Recruitment,
retention, and development of a first-rate
and diverse faculty represent a nationwide
problem. A reported 374 full-time and 43
part-time faculty positions are unfilled
in 56 dental schools across the country.
According to recent studies, 36 percent of
faculty members who left academia chose
to enter private practice because of the
lack of competitive teaching salaries and
20 percent retired. At TUSDM, we will
significantly improve our ability to recruit
and retain talented faculty by increasing our
investment in endowed chairs and salary
competitiveness. We aim to accomplish
several objectives in the area of faculty
support:
• Hire senior basic science research
faculty to collaborate on school and
university research priorities
• Endow professorships
• Develop clinical and administrative
faculty into leadership positions and
increase the faculty/student ratio in
closely supervised clinical teaching
• Establish competitive salaries and earning
opportunities for academic careers and to
meet the cost of living in the Boston area
• Support programs to enhance faculty
development and morale

Dr. Steve Tonelli, past presicent of the Dental Alumni Associ-
ation, a member of Tufts’ Dental M Club Executive Committee,
and the Dean’s Inner Circle, has served organized dentistry on
the state and national level as chairman of the East Middlesex
Dental Society and general chairman of the Yankee Dental
Congress, among other posts. He is a Fellow of the American
College of Dentists as well as a Fellow and District 1 regent of
the International College of Dentists. He and his wife Peggy are
three-time Tufts parents.
“I have been a dentist in New England for over 25 years and
can say that Tufts is the most recognized dental school in this
area—and probably in the country. When I tell patients that
my son attends Tufts, they immediately ask if he is going to be
a dentist. I think our alumni are proud to say that they have
graduated from Tufts Dental School, because it is synonymous
with great training. The care, skill, and judgment that Tufts
graduates gain in their training translates to excellent dentistry,
delivered not only in New England, but across the nation and,
indeed, throughout the world.”
