“ Through what I call ‘the power
of we,’ each of us has the
responsibility to work together
to realize our dream of a truly
civil society—in which all
people have the opportunity to
achieve their fullest potential.
Whether we are businesspeople
or politicians, educators or
homemakers, health care
workers or artists, scientists
or clergy, bringing this world
closer to that vision should be
our ultimate goal.”

On a U.S. college campus today, a center for
community service is as obligatory as a salad bar.
So what sets Tisch College apart?
We stand alone in at least four
dimensions:
We have overturned the traditional
“center” model.
Although Tisch College does, in
fact, have a central home on the
Hill, we make ourselves at home
everywhere—across the university,
and in every school, discipline,
department, and corner of the
curriculum. The result? Active
citizenship has become, at Tufts,
a theme that infuses every facet of
our work as an institution. Public
service and community engagement
become not a task, but a way. Before
they graduate, 60 percent of Tufts
undergraduates take at least one
course with an active citizenship
component, and 30 percent do
grass-roots work in the communities
around our campuses. Through our
infusion model, we are truly inspiring
the campus!
– President Lawrence S. Bacow
We insist on connecting active
citizenship with academic rigor
and learning outcomes.
Most colleges promote the idea that
students can learn from their service
experiences—but very few insist
on documenting that learning and
using the results to improve future
programs. Even fewer colleges
support faculty research that deepens
our understanding of the nature and
importance of civic engagement.
Tisch College does both.
We focus not on symptoms,
but on root causes.
We ask our students to approach
their service work not only with
their hearts, but also with their
minds; we give them the analytical
tools to assess the root causes of
societal problems, to devise practical
solutions, and to drive deep positive
change. The faculty research we
promote shares the same focus.
