The work of Tisch College triggers a cascade
of benefits for our students, for our faculty,
for everyone they go on to serve—and, not
incidentally, for the university itself.
As we encourage the people of Tufts to approach their lives and
work in the spirit of active citizenship, we make the most of the
university’s talent, inspiration, and resources.
What’s more, our work aligns perfectly with Tufts’ larger strategic
themes. For example, the university’s growing emphasis on crossdisciplinary
research dovetails with our collaborative approach to
tackling large systemic problems. Tufts’ deep-seated international
perspective inspires us to define “active citizenship” as extending
across national boundaries and around the world. And we’re equally
committed to supporting Tufts’ growth in the life sciences. From
stem cell research to HIV, obesity to famine, we live in an era defined
by complex public health issues; what could be more important than
instilling active citizenship in tomorrow’s life-science leaders?
Ultimately, we aim to make Tufts University an exemplary
“active citizen” itself:
• A leader in reviving the service ideals of
American higher education
• An inspiration to other institutions, by using our
resources not only for the benefit of our students
but for our community and the world
• A catalyst, through the active citizenship of our
graduates, for important societal change
One hundred fifty years ago, Tufts’ first president, Hosea Ballou 2nd,
defined the purpose of the new college as “sending its energies
forth.” Today, through Tisch College, we send forth an electrifying
new model for the purpose of higher education: to prepare active
citizens to do their work in the world.
